My name is Sam Prince and I am the director of a production company here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and have been an actor for over 30 years. I've directed and written plays, and screenplays and taught many acting classes. This podcast is your place to learn how to move forward with your career in acting, theater, film, playwriting, screenwriting, and much more. There will be inspiring conversations with special guests as well. So welcome to the creativitorium podcast and action. Welcome, welcome. Welcome to the creativitorium podcast. Man, I'm so glad you guys are with me. I don't even know what episode number we are on. But I am so excited that you guys are keeping listening, keep the the readership and the listenership and following ship, if that's a word. I'm just speechless, you know, cuz it's just a cool thing. And just to see like different parts of the world pop up, that are enjoying the show. It's just so great. And I'm just so grateful. And I just want to continue and continue talking about performing arts because that is my passion, obviously. So let's get into it. Let's think about what we just learned. We learned from my great friend about how when you work with incredible actors that it lifts elevates your game. It lifts your game elevates your acting, you start saying okay, I want to be like these people. I'm not going to be the weakest link of this production. I'm going to be the best link and we'll step your game up a notch. That is so true. And then how to do those big monologues. She had some great tips of how she gets tackles those, those really big monologues that take a lot of work. What else do we learned? We learned about getting paid? And Shakespeare? Shakespeare is hot right now, y'all it's a big deal. So let's take advantage of Shakespeare. And let's get on it. Because it's around the world, you know. And then we learned about, you know, just learning about Shakespeare, you know, how, how difficult it can be that language, that eloquent language that he wrote in? You know, it's difficult to learn. But my good friend gave some great tips on how you can do that and tackle it. And then it's hot, y'all. Shakespeare's The biggest? He he's produced everywhere. There's, there's no, there's no. He's like the Michael Jordan. Of the play world. Nobody can touch him. I mean, you know, some people say them, Ron can whatever. But that's an argument from the Michael Jordan era. Website experience the best as far as the most produced. And so if you learn it, and figure out how you can tackle that eloquent language and make it beautiful yourself and make your performance beautiful. You're already stepped up the game. And you already can do things that you never thought you could do before. Alright, so what else? What else do we learn? We learned so much more that we can talk about in those early episodes. But I just want to talk about what we just recently learned. But if you want to catch what we learned in those other 12 episodes, check them out y'all. You will not be disappointed. Alright, so now let's talk about what we're going to get into. What will you learn? Well, what's coming up some exciting stuff y'all. For example, I have a very prominent director, slash creative writer slash comic writer slash, producer slash whatever you want to say, from Detroit. And I can't wait for y'all to hear his life story. And what he does now what he's excited to do now and there's some acting opportunities out there, y'all, especially if you're in Detroit, so you got to listen up there. Okay? What else we got a very prominent, very successful theater owner and producer from the ATL, y'all. Atlanta, she's from out there in that area, and she is doing her thing, and I can't wait to talk to her and share her story with you. And then also told you about my comedian cousin. He is hot. I can't wait. He's actually coming on this side of the state in March, I can't wait to see him. But that is gonna be a great interview with him about performing as a comic, and doing his acting thing. I'm so proud of him. But let's get into right now. The nitty gritty what I want to talk about. And it really is about what acting can do to increase your confidence. It's it's just a known fact that not only do I mean it's obvious, you obviously need confidence to get up on stage, or in front of a camera in front of a bunch of people and act and perform. That's obvious. But what it also does as an actor is increases your confidence as well. Like just like, Okay, you tackle that? What do we want to call it that? That fear threshold to where you've elevated your game? And now okay, you did that first acting, performance, whatever it was who now Hey, I got that off my back. My bucket list is flagging, check that off. And now I have more confidence. But what I'm saying is even after that, it just increases your confidence, you know, the more you do it, the more the more different roles that you have. And you're like, wow, I didn't know I could do that. Now I can't. It just increases your confidence even more. And I'll just speak personally, you know, like, I just did, Frederick went really great. Very happy about it, but I played the lead role. And it was definitely the most lines I had ever done. You know, I was trying to think back. That probably was a one row or two that had same amount of lines, maybe because it was a longer play and you know it but I don't think so. I think this was definitely probably one of the top so I was nervous about all those lines. But I was also nervous about just playing the role of an historical figure of Frederick Douglass. You know, and that's that's a huge a huge undertaking to do you know, you when you have to portray a real figure. I don't know how people like who, like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jamie Foxx and Will Smith, you know, have played roles of famous people keep going on and on. I am looking for two types of creative cats looking for people who want to learn how to act or want to improve their acting skills. I provide acting and audition coaching for every level. But I'm also looking for all those creative cats out there who have a play or screenplay idea. Or maybe you're just stuck and need help writing your masterpiece. I can help you with that too. Just go to Sambre dot productions. That's S A m b e r dot productions and click coaching. All your options are right there and we will achieve your goals together. It's never too late. Alright, let's go that you want to make sure that you represent that person in the right way. You know you don't want to screw that up. So there's a lot of A lot of fear a lot of a lot of trepidation that I have in the role. But you do it, you do it scared, you do it nervously. You do it with those butterflies in your stomach. And now that I look back, and it's over, I feel that I did it to the best of my ability, and my confidence of doing another historical role, or another role with those many lines. I feel like I can do that, you know, I My confidence has built up to where I was scared of both of those things before and now I am not, will I still be scared, of course, you know, somebody says, hey, we want you to play. I don't know, Malcolm X, in this new play that we wrote. Yes, I would be scared, as you know what. But I think I will take it on. And I think I would do my best to make the spirit of Malcolm X his family, you know, that whole thing, you know, I would just same with Frederick. So just on a personal note, we can always use that extra bit of confidence, we can always use that extra bit of, of taking ourselves to the next level. And that's really what it's all about, you know, just improving ourselves and making ourselves better. And that's really what acting does. It's a crazy thing. And I know so many adults that have told me straight up, you know, even after a show I could never do that I could never get on stage will be so scared. I would pee myself, my pants, I would forget all my lines, I would just go blank, I would be so nervous to go blank. I'd have nightmares. You know, the whole, I've heard it all. I've heard it all. But let me tell you something. I just did a kid's drama class A couple weeks ago. And we had our final presentation the other day. Last Saturday, at least these girls. I mean, they are you know, between the ages of, you know, like nine and 13. And they just got up on stage at lions memorize actions, gone costumes, the whole night, and just did their thing. And I was so proud of them. Because we only had six weeks to learn this little skit. And they nailed it, you know, and their family and friends are right there in front of them. And yes, they were nervous, they were so getting nervous. It was ridiculous. But none of them dropped at lions. None of them froze, none of them got scared. And I truly believe that that was a confidence builder for all of them. And you could just see it in their eyes how how excited they were, that they had done it. And this was the very first production that they've ever really done. And I was just so proud of so to those hosts. Those that those that are nervous and scared they needed to come to that show. And I need to show a video that show because these girls are much, much much younger than they were did their thing and they killed it. So that had to increase. Like I said their confidence. Now they can now they know I can do I can do this. And I hope they come to my action point 2.0 class because we're gonna, we're gonna do a whole play. And we're gonna challenge them even more. And that's what it's all about. So if kids can do it, you can do it. Alright. So let me give you some other tips. You know if you have trepidations about acting, and how and if you have some confidence, self esteem, hate to call him issues, because we all have issues. All right, we all have our whatever we're battling with faces, whatever So self esteem and confidence is your battle. That's a better word battle. You know, and you know, for me showing the kids doing their thing, still doesn't, doesn't, you know, get you to where oh my gosh, I want to do this, I want to, you know, increase my self confidence on stage and perform, then try volunteering or working backstage. Let's see what that's all about first. And I have a friend who is very nervous about acting, he comes to my adult improv class, but he's never done any acting before and very, very nervous. So we decided to have him help out backstage for our play. And he did that and you're searching the Lightning Experience for him, you know, he made some friends, he, he asks an actor's questions, he got to see them on stage, he got to see what it was like with what what happens when they go on and come off and their nervousness, and you got to see me and my nervousness, you know, so it was a big eye opening experience for him. And he said, you know, what, I know that I see how you guys work and how the stage comes, you know, my confidence is building that, I will want to do this very soon, in the future, you know, maybe the next one, who knows, is what he's telling me now, so he got to see it without actually doing it. You know, I mean, he was very instrumental in moving a lot of things backstage, which I could not have done without him. But he got to feel that emotion, he got to see what it was like, You got to get a little taste of, of what the actors do out there on the stage. And so I implore you, and encourage you to do that, you know, find some backstage work that you can kind of get a little glimpse of what it would be like, on stage without having to do it, you know, you're backstage, just watching. Just watching and learning was another job. Take some small roles, you know, find those. Find those really small rows, you know, a couple lines here and there. That you know, set the leading role and not something you have to get so nervous about with all the lines you don't something small, something easy. And there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with that, it's very important to feel like you just get a little taste before you have like a big long leading role. So just try the small ones. Try to small little tiny ones. Alright. But the most important tip I can give you is just take the leap. And I think the biggest obstacle, self esteem obstacle is the fear. And you can't have any of that view is from the devil. Fear causes worry and all kinds of everything. Fears are number one. The number one thing that you battle with the number one thing that we all battle with, and fear comes in all shapes and sizes. But I would say take that leap, overcome that fear. Just do it. And you'll be shocked at the person that you become after you jump into that fear. Or you tackle that fear. And you accomplish that fear and you destroy that fear. It's amazing the person that you become money after you do that. Alright, so there we go. We got some good stuff there. I hope this is a confidence builder for you that that's the main goal of this. No matter what you're doing, and only mean how to be acting. If you're afraid of bungee jumping. Just do it. Take the leap. That's the best. The best metaphor I can think of is nothing if you're afraid of bungee jumping, what's the only thing you can do? Jump that's the best way to end it right there.
